Longing for Haifa

I comb the seashore with my eyes for the last time
Waiting for a ship
A sail
Or even just an orange tree branch
I want to cross
Break through the sea’s barriers

I want my orange tree to bear fruit
For whatever lives in the sea to eat
Maybe it will save me from a shark’s teeth

I smile at the sea one last time
Or maybe the time before last
I watch for Noah’s miracle

The sea begins to carry me
Pulls me toward the sun
Whose cries I’ve heard every day, begging one last time
She tells me how many times I’ve compared her to my beloved
Her first rays falling every morning like her hair
Clinging gently to her waist

How many times she’s fooled me
Knowing she is a coastal city
We don’t see her first threads

The sea still tears me apart
Steals my limbs
My body betrays me
One hand swims
The other pushes waves away

And despite all this, I will cross
I will leave for tomorrow an orange fruit
Cast by the sea onto the shore whenever it wishes

Maybe it will visit Haifa’s beaches
And from there I will grow againNeither the sea will stop my love for her hair
Nor will it erase the last voice of the sun
